A business built over a lifetime.

Ar Han Thai is a family-run business group founded by Prabhakar Kumar Singh. What began with a small entrepreneurial venture grew through trade, hospitality, property and international business into a group now carried forward by the next generation.

Company history

From one venture to a family group.

Prabhakar Kumar Singh began his business career with a travel agency, starting without an established business base or inherited enterprise.

The income generated from that first venture was reinvested into import and export activity between India and Thailand. Through this work, he developed relationships with Thai suppliers and gained direct knowledge of the market.

That experience led to a hospitality venture in Kolkata. After establishing the original Thai restaurant and bar, the group expanded into mall food courts with outlets at Forum, Axis Mall and South City Mall. Managing several locations at once eventually proved difficult to sustain with the same level of focus, and the Forum and Axis Mall outlets were subsequently closed. The South City Mall counter, located within Spencer’s, remains active today and has become particularly well known for its shawarma.

Returns from the group’s operating businesses were also reinvested into property and other ventures. Over time, the business expanded beyond a single operating company into a wider collection of family-owned interests.

The business has changed shape several times, but its method has remained consistent: build carefully, reinvest, hold assets for the long term and maintain trust with the people the group works with.

The beginning

Travel

The founder’s first venture created the starting capital and operating discipline for everything that followed.

Expansion

India–Thailand trade

Import and export activity broadened the group’s commercial network and connected the business directly with Thailand.

Next stage

Hospitality in Kolkata

The original Thai restaurant and bar led to a wider food-court presence across Forum, Axis Mall and South City Mall. The group later consolidated these operations so greater attention could be given to its strongest locations. Today, the South City Mall counter inside Spencer’s continues to trade and is especially known for its shawarma.

Long-term growth

Property ownership

Returns from earlier ventures were increasingly directed into commercial and residential property across Kolkata.

Today

A second generation joins

The next generation — Ayushi, Deep and Kanishk — joined the family business, with responsibilities spanning operations, finance, real estate and wider family oversight.

The group today

A diversified family business.

Ar Han Thai is best understood as a privately held family group rather than a single restaurant or retail brand. Its interests have developed over time through operating businesses, property ownership and selective expansion outside India.

01

Hospitality

From the original Bentinck Street restaurant and bar, the group expanded into several Kolkata mall food courts. Today its hospitality presence includes Bentinck Street and the South City Mall counter inside Spencer’s.

02

Property

Commercial and residential holdings across Kolkata, including ownership of 31 Bentinck Street.

03

International business

Business interests in the United Kingdom, reflecting the group’s continued expansion beyond India.

Leadership

The people behind the business.

The group remains closely held and family-run. Its founder continues to guide the business, while the next generation has taken on responsibility across operations, finance, property and wider family involvement.

How the group operates

Built around a few simple principles.

The company’s story is less about rapid expansion than steady accumulation: build a viable business, reinvest what it produces and protect the reputation that makes the next opportunity possible.

01 · Trust

Keep your word.

A strong reputation has been one of the group’s most important business assets, particularly within Kolkata’s business community.

02 · Ownership

Think long term.

Profits from operating businesses have historically been reinvested into durable assets, especially real estate.

03 · Family

Build across generations.

The business is now transitioning from founder-led growth into a structure in which the second generation carries increasing responsibility, while remaining closely connected as a family.
